The Fukasawa Residence is a private home in Japan that embraces traditional timber construction while responding to the constraints of a narrow plot. Designed with a focus on wood as both structure and surface, the project uses exposed timber framing and carefully detailed joinery to reflect long-standing Japanese building traditions. The residence is organised vertically on its slender site, with spatial transitions designed around a central stair that connects living, dining, and sleeping areas across multiple levels. Natural light enters through strategically placed openings, accentuating the warmth and texture of the timber throughout the interior.
Externally, the façade expresses rhythm and proportion through layered wooden elements that articulate depth and shadow, creating a calm enclosure within the dense urban context. Interior spaces are arranged to maximise usable area while maintaining visual connections between floors and outdoor views. The detailing emphasises craftsmanship, with visible structural intersections and finely finished surfaces that enhance both tactile quality and spatial clarity.
