Adaptive Reuse Gallery Projects

Atelier L'abri Design the FOIL Gallery in Montreal

The FOIL Gallery in Montreal was conceptualized by artists and realized by the architecture firm Atelier L'Abri. This represents an adaptive reuse initiative that has converted two sections of a vacant early 20th-century industrial building into a combined contemporary art exhibition space and neighborhood café.

The architectural approach for FOIL Gallery prioritizes revealing and preserving the original structural fabric of the historic site — including the exposed timber trusses, the concrete columns, and the sawtooth roof. A central, custom-crafted metal volume is inserted to house private functional areas, while new acoustic walls provide flexible display surfaces. This effectively creates a material dialogue between raw historical textures and minimalist contemporary interventions.

The FOIL Gallery was founded by artists Fvckrender (Frédéric Duquette) and Baeige (Jo-Anie Charland).
