Associer Designs the James Baldwin Media Library & the Refugee House

— July 1, 2025 — Art & Design
French architecture firm Associer has just completed the design of the James Baldwin Media Library and the Refugee House. Located in Paris, the team adapts and extends an existing secondary school. There are new components in the form of poured earth and latticed timber.

The project fuses elements of a media library and a center that aids the Deaf with special range of event spaces, cooking areas, and classrooms. Madec explains to Dezeen, "It is not necessary to demolish everything in order to rebuild. The reuse of elements from the existing building sees it become the quarry for its own future. No concrete is added. All materials used in the project are wood, fibres, raw earth and reused materials, including signage."
