A hot topic of debate, mental illness has long been a discussion that has taken place in American society, but has recently been more vehemently focused on following the Connecticut shootings last week.
The tragic shootings brought up issues of gun control, and, perhaps more importantly, reducing the stigma surrounding mental illness. In a society where mental illness is not surrounded by a cloud of fear it is believed that those who are suffering can more easily seek the treatment that is needed. Under half of people in the United States that have any kind of mental illness seek treatment.
