The design was done by ARCHIEE, a company that was helping to display another artist's work for a show in Paris. Instead of just making the shelves for the event and then disposing of them, the goal was to have them transportable to be used afterwards.

As such the shelves are designed with a laddered effect that can be contracted or expanded. The piece basically folds in half once everything has been removed from the shelving section, making it easy to move from one place to the next. This design would be extremely useful for those who need to move from one place to the next on a consistent basis to display their work.
