Rahul Kalvapalle — October 24, 2014 — World
Ear-IT is an innovative project that aims to monitor and track urban acoustics in the Spanish city of Santander, with the aim of improving the quality of life of residents by better understanding things ranging from energy consumption to traffic flow.
With backing from the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for Research, the Ear-IT team set up more than 12,000 recording devices around Santander, most of which were integrated into lamp posts.
The project has a number of applications including improvement of traffic flow, reduction of air pollution and alerting people to events taking place around them. The technology uses a three-step acoustic detection process
The Ear-IT project's testing period concluded last month, and the project is set to be fully completed by the end of the year.
