Neurodegenerative Disease-Detecting Earbuds

These High-Tech Earbuds Can Spot Signs Of Alzheimer's

A group of scientists and engineers working on the Progression Assessment in Neurodegenerative Disorders of Aging (PANDA) project have developed high-tech earbuds that could potentially offer promise in being able to detect the onset of diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

The team, comprising individuals from Aarhus University, Rigshospitalet University and the health technology firm T&W Engineering, designed a device that is referred to as an ear-EEG (electroencephalogram) due to its ability to keep tabs on electrical activity in the brain. The earbuds are also able to monitor body temperature, heart rate and blood oxygen readings.

What makes these earbuds a potential improvement over existing monitoring systems is the fact that it isn't obtrusive and can comfortably be worn during sleep, allowing for higher quality of data and reliable spotting of tell-tale disease signs.
