A group of researchers from the Umea University in Sweden, working in collaboration with scientists at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, have developed a high-tech handheld tool that makes it easier than ever to take full advantage of smartphone and cloud technology to quickly and accurately diagnose ear infections.
Users have to start by using a regular otoscope to take an image of their inner ear, before uploading the image to a cloud storage facility via a smartphone app. The image is then analyzed and compared with archive images by software that looks for special visual features that could help aid the diagnostic process.
