Canine-Inclusive Portraiture

Dutch photographer Hellen van Meene has an eye for capturing the eccentricity of otherwise mundane situations. She focuses in on her subjects with a raw sense of reality that makes each of the photos seem deeply personal. Meanwhile her subtle use of carefully selected colors works to give the pieces an artistic ambiance.

Recent work of the talented Dutch photographer includes a number of girls situated beside dogs or with their faces covered in their own hair, with the latter implying a sense of loneliness. Another notable image shows a girl sleeping atop of a pile of mattresses, making for a scene that's reminiscent of 'The Princess and the Pea' fairytale. Breeds of dogs are likened to the girls they sit beside, whether it be in hairstyle and color or facial expression.
