There are traditional Halloween decorations and then there are the disturbing porcelain figurines of Maria Rubinke. The sculptures rethink the classic art form in very bloody ways, turning innocent children and characters into the stuff of nightmares. The only thing that would make them scarier is if they came to life with blood-curdling screams.
The disturbing porcelain figurines are, as Beautiful Decay aptly puts it, "part Precious Moments, part Chucky." As though straight out of a Brothers Grimm fairy tale, the disturbing porcelain figurines point to terrible calamities that have befallen children who misbehaved. In one instance, a little girl who has stolen a bushel of apples is being strangled by a snake while another girl who has wandered away into a dark forest suffers from a mushroom growth.
