Dirac Bass Uses Psychoacoustics to Amplify Sound on Small Speakers

Aimed for use on smartphones and small portable speakers, Dirac Bass is a new audio solution that gets around the physical limitations of small devices. Taking advantage of psychoacoustics, Dirac Bass essentially circumvents the reproduction of bass notes and instead uses "a combination of artificially generated overtones that are several octaves higher." This fools the human mind into perceiving deep bass and amplifies the volume produced by small speakers without causing distortion or clipping.

Dirac Bass will make its full debut at CES 2019, though it may still be a while before we learn about all the devices that support it. Smartphone and small portable speakers were the only devices mentioned in the announcement, but tablets and laptops could also benefit from the tech. Dirac has also stated that this new innovation will work exclusively in conjunction with Dirac Panorama Sound or Dirac Power Sound.
