Released by David A. Mellis as part of his MIT PhD research, this DIY cellphone offers those who want to the ability to create their own phone from home. With the instructions available online, the cellphone design by Mellis utilizes Arduino GSM Shield to display the time, make calls and even send text messages.

The DIY cellphone design is a breakaway from the very strict smartphone market, which is dominated by multinational corporations that are constantly patenting features and designs. By offering detailed instructions on how to create the phone and where to obtain the necessary components, Mellis is helping to offer frustrated users or those with fixed incomes the ability to stay connected without having to rely on cellphone manufacturers.
