DIY Retro Windows 98 Handheld Computer is Old-school Inside and Out

The DIY Retro Windows 98 Handheld Computer brings classic computing to life with genuine vintage hardware. Created by Changliang Li, it runs on an authentic Intel Pentium i586 motherboard salvaged from 90s medical equipment, complete with floppy drive port, VGA output, serial and parallel connectors, and IDE hard drive support. This is not an imitation of the era but a functional piece of it, delivering the quirks and charm of computing before the turn of the millennium.

The build features a 4:3 LCD screen, a full-sized keyboard, and an integrated trackball for precise control. Its chunky case, visible screws, and labeled ports evoke the industrial feel of 90s electronics, while the acrylic screen cover protects the display during portable use. Released as an open-source design, the project invites others to recreate their own retro handheld, celebrating a time when computing was slower, more tactile, and deeply personal.
