The Cupertino Courtyard House translates the concept of the enclosed Japanese garden into a Californian residential context. Organized around a central landscaped courtyard, the home filters light through cedar screens and deep overhangs that shape a quiet rhythm between interior and exterior. Natural materials such as wood, plaster, and stone introduce warmth and tactility, creating a continuous dialogue with the surrounding vegetation. Each room opens toward the garden, reinforcing the home’s meditative core and sense of stillness.

Balancing openness and privacy, SHED Architecture & Design employs proportion and material restraint to evoke harmony. The plan encourages mindful movement, where sliding panels replace doors and circulation flows effortlessly through sheltered corridors. Subtle craftsmanship and attention to shadow lend the structure a timeless presence, embodying a union of Japanese calm and West Coast modernism.
