Port Building-Nestled Museums

Colectivo C733 Installs a Museum inside of a Mexican Port Building

Mexican design studio Colectivo C733 has taken on a new design project that preserves an 18th-century port customs building by constructing a cultural center and museum around it. The team uses historical adobe and steel and the project was commissioned by the municipality of San Blas. The goal was to take care of and preserve what was left of the customs building.

C733 explains, "The building seeks to unfold activities to a second level with other opportunities for wind, views, and light, turning the same rooftops into box seat spaces for cultural activities." The edge at the northeast side has a wedge-shaped structure behind another screen. The team adds, "An outdoor forum [is] shaped like a Sikuli, a Huichol structure that represents the composition of the universe and the connection between human beings, nature, and the universe."
