Belgian designer Bram Kerkhofs designs the 'Coil Piece,' which is essentially a modular furniture system that blends together the function of both an open display shelf and a storage cabinet. The Coil is wrapped within a semi-translucent curtain that is made up of woven elastic rope rather than the traditional hard shell. The curtain wall opens up as the ropes are stretched out to create a curve that is cut from stainless steel sheets that create the top and bottom of the display cabinet.
Kerkhofs implements his education as a jeweler and focuses his attention on the construction as he connects the two materials at the hinge, joint, and knot as the detail. The shelves within the structure have a smaller surface than the bottom so that it does not come in contact with the elastic ropes. The color of the ropes also match the metal structure's tone and as there are no doors, the structure is a free-standing unit that can be accessed from any angle.
