STRANG Completes the Van Der Vlugt Residence

— April 21, 2026 — Eco
The Miami-based architecture firm STRANG has completed the Van der Vlugt Residence in the Upper Florida Keys — a coastal resilience-focused home project that is elevated ten feet above ground on robust concrete columns with a 50-foot cantilever that proactively addresses sea level rise and storm surge. In the meantime, the structure preserves the ow-lying landscape’s natural contours.

The design for the Van der Vlugt Residence incorporates board-formed concrete that flows from the rugged exterior into interior spaces, creating striking visual contrasts. Passive cooling strategies include floor-to-ceiling windows for natural light and strategically placed louvres for shading. The property has also achieved 100% solar-powered operation for over 1200 hours and net-zero energy consumption for 31 days in a single year. A spiral staircase wrapped in cool gray microcement acts as the architectural joint where the home’s curvature meets its axis, mimicking the site’s waterfront boundary.

Trend Themes

  1. Elevated Resilient Architecture — Homes Raised On Robust Structural Columns And Extended Cantilevers That Address Sea Level Rise Could Recast Coastal Building Typologies And Insurance Models.
  2. Integrated Passive Solar Design — Net-Zero Operation Achieved Through Combined Passive Cooling, Strategic Glazing, And Onsite Photovoltaics Has The Potential To Redefine Energy Expectations For Luxury Residences.
  3. Material Continuity Aesthetics — Seamless Use Of Board-Formed Concrete And Microcement From Exterior To Interior Suggests New Product Lines That Merge Structural Performance With High-End Finishes.

Industry Implications

  1. Residential Construction — Elevated, Resilient Structural Systems And Integrated Energy Solutions Could Drive New Construction Techniques And Cost Models For Coastal Homes.
  2. Coastal Real Estate Development — Projects Emphasizing Sea Level Adaptation And Landscape Preservation May Shift Land Valuation, Zoning Practices, And Market Demand Along Waterfronts.
  3. Building Materials Manufacturing — Demand For Durable, Aesthetic Structural Materials Like Board-Formed Concrete And Advanced Microcements Could Spur Innovation In Precast Systems And Protective Finishes.
