Transforming Table Chairs

Che-Chia Hsu's Table-Chair Conceals a Fold-Out Seat From Within

The Transforming Table Chair is a dual-function furniture piece by Che-Chia Hsu that integrates a foldable chair directly into a compact table structure. The chair is stored within the table and can be pulled out, unfolded, and adjusted into a full seating position in a few steps. The Transforming Table Chair is built using traditional Chinese joinery, with tenon joints forming the core structure instead of visible hardware. This approach keeps the form minimal while maintaining strength and precision.

The chair relies partly on the user’s body for stability, using tension to support the backrest rather than rigid supports. Materials include lightweight pine panels paired with cotton linen fabric, balancing durability with flexibility. The design responds to compact living conditions, especially in dense urban settings, by combining storage, seating, and surface into a single footprint without adding visual bulk.
