The Casa con Lucarna brings natural light and passive cooling to Chile through a layout that emphasizes daylighting and ventilation. Designed by Paralelo Transversal on the outskirts of Santiago, the 302-square-metre house features a south-facing lucarna, or raised skylight, that channels light into the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. This element defines the silhouette while regulating thermal comfort, making the skylight both functional and sculptural. The house is lifted twenty centimetres on steel stilts to allow airflow beneath, while its structure relies on commercial-dimension materials to reduce waste.
The plan organizes public living areas, children’s rooms, guest quarters, and the main suite around gardens and patios that encourage cross-ventilation. Louvers on the eastern facade soften harsh sunlight, and a semi-translucent overhang diffuses brightness without heat. Casa con Lucarna shows how architectural clarity and environmental sensitivity can merge, creating a contemporary home that is efficient, contextual, and responsive to climate.
