Considering the phrase that "form follows function" may help to understand the Busan 360 Degrees concept proposed for South Korea. This peculiar entry into the international architecture competition takes on a shape completely alien against the familiar elements in buildings.
These are computer models and plans for the Busan Opera House, but designers Marc Fornes and Volkan Alkanoglu strove to invent an entirely new formal language to optimize the project for sustainability as well. With the requirements for the concert halls, program and circulation met within, the spiky shell of the semi-spherical exterior was born from the integration of natural ventilation and solar orientation. The island Busan 360° concept would become an anomalous icon to the city and country at large.
