The Bland Castles Installation Turns Beach into Critique of Urban Design

— August 8, 2025 — Art & Design
Bland Castles, a sand installation by Thomas Heatherwick, transformed a seaside beach in Morecambe Bay into a striking protest against uninspired architecture. Created as part of his Humanise campaign, the three-meter-wide cityscape of sand mimicked flat, lifeless tower blocks, calling attention to the “blandemic” of soulless urban design. Playful in form yet pointed in message, it reflected Heatherwick’s belief that buildings should inspire and uplift rather than diminish the human spirit.

The installation invited the public to craft their own joyful sandcastles decorated with shells and flags. In contrast to the deliberately monotonous artist-made structures, these spontaneous creations overflowed with personality and charm. Heatherwick saw the interaction as proof that people instinctively favor architecture rich in detail, texture, and emotion—underscoring his vision for cities that embrace creativity and human connection over sterile uniformity.
