Artist Bijian Fan Creates Intricate Origami-Like Birds & Sea Animals
Meghan Young — May 7, 2014 — Art & Design
The work of Bijian Fan, an artist born in Beijing, China, and based in Camarillo, California, will take people's breath away, especially those with an affinity for birds and sea creatures. Inspired by the art of origami, he uses paper to construct his sculptures. But what sets Bijian Fan's work apart from that iconic Asian art form is its reliance on intricate cuts and smoothing silhouettes.
What truly makes Bijian Fan's paper sculptures stand out, however, is his photographs of them. He places them in their natural habitats, which often involve water. Whether it is a swan resting on the surface of a lake or a stingray seemingly swimming through one, the images bring the sculptures to life like nothing else.
