The Honda Base Station prototype is a lightweight travel trailer developed by Honda’s U.S. research and development teams that previews a modular towable camper. The Base Station is designed to weigh less than 1,500 pounds, enabling it to be towed by compact SUVs and crossovers such as the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. The trailer’s exterior includes interchangeable window panels that can be swapped with functional accessories including an external kitchenette, shower, or air conditioning unit. A pop-up roof extends interior headroom to around seven feet when deployed. The Base Station’s interior includes a fold-out futon that converts into a queen-size sleeping area, and an optional bunk configuration increases sleeping capacity.
The prototype’s systems include a lithium-ion battery pack paired with integrated solar panels and an inverter to power onboard accessories and outlets, with provisions for connection to campsite power sources. Five large side windows and a top-hinged rear tailgate allow natural light and access between the interior and campsite.
