Aviation Charting Features

Garmin Expands SmartCharts to Garmin Pilot Web

Garmin has expanded its SmartCharts aviation charting feature to Garmin Pilot Web, a flight planning website that works alongside the company’s mobile application.

Garmin's innovative SmartCharts replaces traditional, cluttered paper-style approach plates with dynamic, data-driven charts that automatically adjust to display only the most relevant information for a specific flight operation. This data includes departure procedures, standard terminal arrival routes, and instrument approach procedures.

All in all, Garmin's SmartCharts aviation charting feature is noteworthy because it simplifies preflight planning by integrating real-time data — such as weather and Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMs) — directly into the charting interface. The service automatically recalculates approach minima or equipment requirements based on those conditions. A pilot, for example, can select their aircraft type, intended runway, and transition fixes, and the chart will strip away extraneous details

Dynamic Data-driven Charting
Charts that recompute displayed procedures and minima based on live flight parameters enable personalized navigation displays tailored to a specific flight.
Contextualized Information Filtering
Interfaces that automatically strip extraneous chart elements deliver streamlined situational awareness focused on immediate operational needs.
Real-time Weather and NOTAM Integration
Continuous incorporation of meteorological and regulatory updates into planning tools shifts decision inputs toward current environmental and airspace constraints.

Industries Being Reshaped

Aviation Operations
Operational units could see optimized dispatching and approach selection driven by charts that adapt to aircraft type and prevailing conditions.
Flight Training and Simulation
Training environments that simulate live-updating charts would allow realistic scenario-based instruction around dynamic approach and diversion planning.
Aeronautical Data Services
Providers of navigation databases and charting content may evolve into real-time data platforms that fuse NOTAMs, procedures, and weather for downstream systems.
