Waymo is collaborating with UPS on a pilot test, where its autonomous vans will drive packages around Phoenix. The test will have the autonomous vans take packages from UPS locations to the processing locations. During the trip, a safety driver will also be present. The test is scheduled to begin before March of 2020.
The test will be used to asses how the two organizations can help each other in the future. For UPS, implementing autonomous vehicles into package delivery services could drastically increase the speed it could operate, as well as also increasing reliability and eliminating costs. This is because autonomous vehicles could be moving packages without needing to stop.
