An impressive design challenge may have less to do with furnishing a spacious room, and rather more with solving for exceptionally compact spaces. Ascending Retreat is a delightful example of such a task, through which Thiemo Hildebrandt has assembled a multi-level bedroom beneath a single flight of stairs.

A structure of steel beams produces a daybed, a desk and a couple of little lofts. No part touches the floor, for the entire framework is supported by the staircase and the back wall. The whimsical arrangement of the various built components offers the inhabitant several unexpected places to sit and store her things, in addition to a rope swing and the seating and shelving possibilities afforded by the riser-less steps of Ascending Retreat.
