Yusuke Sakai's Animal Skin Photos Reveal Intricate Patterns and Textures

Skin is the name of a photo series, captured by photographer Yusuke Sakai, that consists of close-up animal skin photos. The photos capture the intricate details of the skins and fur of a wide variety of species including elephants, giraffes, rhinos and penguins. Sakai captured the photos by visiting a variety of zoos and using his lens to get up close and personal with animals.

These animal skin photos are fascinating in that they are at once recognizable and foreign. Each mark, scar and wrinkle tells a story that can either be personal to the individual creature, applicable to its entire species or both. By capturing these close-ups in rectangular frames, the context of the animals' bodies and overall appearance is removed and the capture section of their body is turned into a work of art.
