Amazon Prime Air is a project from Amazon’s research and development team, aimed at introducing a new type of mail delivery system by drone. The goal of the system is not only to make same-day deliveries, but have packages shipped to people within 30 minutes.
As Amazon notes: “It looks like science fiction, but it’s real” and it promises that seeing Prime Air drones in the sky will be just as normal as trucks on the road. Since there are concerns with public safety, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently developing rules for unmanned aerial vehicles, so it will be a few years before Amazon gets the go-ahead for commercial use. Amazon hopes that the FAA will provide approval for its UAVs by 2015.
With Amazon Prime Air in the works, the possibility of the sky being filled with flying, mail-delivering drones in the future seems very Jetsons-like and perhaps not all that far away from reality.
