'Aldi Local' Sells Items That Are Easily Transported Without a Car

To help consumers differentiate between its regular-sized and city-friendly stores, Aldi is introducing 'Aldi Local' as a new kind of concept store. The first concept store of its kind is appearing in Balham, South London and specifically appeals to urban dwellers as Aldi Local does not stock its shelves with items that aren't easily transported without a car. Although the store is twice as large as the average convenience store at 6,500 square feet, it stocks 300 fewer products than regularly sized Aldi stores.

Like Aldi, many retailers are experimenting with small-format stores in busy city centers that specifically cater to the needs of people who don't have the time or means to drive out to a big-box store to purchase a large portion of products in a single outing.
