AI-Powered Traffic Cameras

AglaiaSense and Leopard Imaging Demonstrate AI Traffic Monitoring

AglaiaSense and Leopard Imaging are developing ai-powered traffic cameras that help cities monitor road activity without storing identifiable video footage. Their AI-VIVA proposal uses edge AI, which processes information directly within cameras, to recognize vehicles, cyclists, buses, and pedestrians. This approach provides traffic authorities with useful data while reducing reliance on conventional surveillance systems.

The MS500 and GS500 cameras use Sony intelligent vision sensors to examine traffic conditions. Raw video is discarded within 400–800 milliseconds, while anonymous information can help adjust traffic signals. The technology requires over 95% less bandwidth than CCTV monitoring, with field tests reporting detection accuracy above 95%.

For municipalities, the system could reduce data transmission expenses while supporting safer intersections. Installation on existing street poles may also lower deployment costs, making privacy-focused traffic management more practical for urban infrastructure projects.

Privacy-preserving Traffic Analytics
Anonymous edge-based monitoring creates room for urban mobility systems that balance public safety, operational insight, and reduced surveillance concerns.
Edge-AI Infrastructure
On-device processing enables faster civic decision-making while lowering bandwidth dependence and cloud infrastructure costs.
Adaptive Signal Optimization
Real-time recognition of pedestrians, cyclists, buses, and vehicles supports more responsive intersections that improve traffic flow and street safety.

Where This Applies

Smart Cities
Municipal infrastructure platforms can integrate privacy-focused sensors to modernize transportation planning without expanding traditional CCTV networks.
Traffic Management
Road authorities gain access to lower-cost, high-accuracy data streams that improve congestion analysis and signal coordination.
Computer Vision
Vision sensor developers can differentiate through anonymized detection systems designed for regulated public-space environments.
