Odile Decq Builds a Glass House for a Client with Vision Loss

In the world of accessible house designs, Odile Decq makes a splash with a new building in Carantec, France that was made to deliver "the optimal lighting conditions for a client with vision impairment." One of the ways that the architectural studio does this is by maximizing the use of translucent glass for the exterior. This enabled the creation of "a uniform level of brightness throughout the interior" which will dramatically improve the comfort of the client.

The accessible house project is named Maison de Verre, after architects Pierre Chareau and Bernard Bijvoet's "iconic [1932] French House" which also used glass as the main material. Odile Decq even used glass for the staircase. The shape of the home, both from inside and outside, is highly irregular and angular. According to Odile Decq, this also improves "the light-box effect."
