In Stephanie Busari's fake news talk, the journalist uses a case study to help people understand the dangers of the duplicitous modern media practice. She looks at the case of the girls from Chibok, Nigeria, who were kidnapped by the terrorist organization Boko Haram in 2014. The story made headlines around the world, with many celebrities posting the message #BringBackOurGirls.
Busari went to Nigeria at the time to cover the story, and she found that many officials in the government were either refusing to answer questions or denying the story whole cloth. In fact, many around Nigeria believed that the story of the Chibok girls was a hoax, a completely fabricated tale.
Inevitably, the news cycle moved on from the story, but two years later Busari managed to obtain a video of the girls that Boko Haram filmed as proof of life. The video was enough to convince governments and move along negotiations, leading to the release of 20 girls.
