Spherical Water Fountains

Maya Lin Debuts a Striking Design for the Obama Presidential Center

A sophisticated spherical water fountain design has been envisioned by American artist Maya Lin. This structure is intended to elevate the atmosphere at the Obama Presidential Center—"a cultural complex in Chicago celebrating Barack Obama's presidency." This piece will be the focal point of the Ann Dunham Water Garden. This lush space is designed to commemorate Obama's mother.

The spherical water fountain—which, needless to say, doubles as a site-specific artwork—is named Seeing Through the Universe. It is comprised of two parts. One is a flat stone that is positioned on the floor. It will be filled with water and streams will "cascade over its edges." The second part is an upright stone structure that has a hole in the middle. This piece will spray mist out into the air, creating a cooling effect for residents.
