Woven Lighting Capsules

Gurunsi lamp tapestries by PET Lamp are a lighting collection rooted in traditional Frafra weaving techniques from northern Ghana, where basketry is a longstanding craft and cultural practice. The series adapts hand-woven forms made by master artisans into large, tapestry-like lamps that filter and diffuse light through woven surfaces, positioning illumination as textured shadow rather than a conventional fixture.

The pieces take direct inspiration from the rounded adobe-and-branch compounds found around Frafra family compounds, with undulating curves and rhythmic patterns that reflect both architectural form and ancestral craft. Artisans incorporate elements such as recycled PET bottles into the weaves to allow wiring to pass through the structure while preserving traditional technique.

Each lamp in the Gurunsi collection is individually hand-woven by members of The Baba Tree community, a group of over 250 artisans in Ghana who combine local straw and elephant grass with PET materials, yielding subtle variations in pattern, tension and curvature. This approach maintains the integrity of heritage weaving while translating it into contemporary lighting design that celebrates cultural knowledge and skilled handcraft. When illuminated, light radiates through the woven tapestry to emphasise texture and shadow in the surrounding space.
