With just an Allen key, a partner, and some creativity, the X2 Smart Shelf from Portuguese joinery company WeWood can take almost any shape. The modular bookshelf is made of several interlocked slats that connect to one another on hinges, allowing them to bend and shift into both regular and obtuse angles based on the whims of the consumer.
The X2 Smart Shelf is conceptually complex, but seeing the shelf's transformations in action makes it easier to understand. Essentially, it consists of two large square shelves that interlock with one another. Each of these two squares are further subdivided into four squares, and all of the joints connect via hinges that can tighten and loosen with an Allen key.
The modular shelf is completely free to be shaped by the consumer thanks to these joints, allowing for as surreal or as clean a look as desired.
