Scarless Surgery Through the Mouth

— April 19, 2008 — Science
It's hard to believe, but removing the appendix without scarring is not possible, and in more ways than one. Trend Hunter posted an article on no-incision appendectomies through the vagina last week, but this week the world's first appendix removal surgery through the mouth was conducted.

The scar-free surgery was performed on Jeff Scholtz a former marine in San Diego, California. Surgeons used a flexible pipe with miniature tools at the end to perform an incision in the stomach wall to remove the appendix.

Trend Themes

  1. Scarless Surgery — Opportunity for developing novel surgical procedures and better patient outcomes through less invasive methods.
  2. Endoscopic Surgery — Opportunity for developing minimally invasive surgical techniques using flexible tubes with miniature tools.
  3. Natural Orifice Surgery — Opportunity for developing procedures that do not require incisions, but access the abdomen or other organs through natural orifices.

Industry Implications

  1. Healthcare — Opportunity for healthcare providers to reduce patient recovery times and costs through minimally invasive surgical techniques.
  2. Medical Device Manufacturing — Opportunity for developing endoscopic tools that increase precision, accuracy and safety of surgical procedures.
  3. Pharmaceuticals — Opportunity for developing products that accelerate patient healing and reduce postoperative pain.
