Architect Emmett McNamara built a beautiful abstract wooden sauna upon the beaches of Inisheer, Ireland. The interesting unit was built as an exhibition for the 'Drop Everything' festival, a contemporary biennial event that is hosted on Inis Oírr. McNamara referenced cultural heritage pieces, like ancient standing stones and a wooden Irish fishing boat called a "currach," to design the sauna. Her inspirations are evident in the orientation and the materials used to build it.
The wooden sauna's exterior and frame is built from overlaying triangular shapes -- creating an abstract futuristic look. The sauna mixes in ancient Irish culture with modernism in a cohesive manner that evokes the imagination of viewers. One might even look at it and assume it's an alien spaceship -- that's the beauty of architecture, it can take functional aspects of living spaces and turn them into works of art.
