Thurgau Travel is expanding its European river-cruise fleet with the Thurgau Avanti in May 2027 and the Thurgau Arva in summer 2028, giving guests two takes on upscale sailing. Avanti arrives as a five-star ship, while Arva adds a less glossy, more wood-led interior and a hybrid drive that uses battery power during maneuvering.
The 135-meter Avanti will replace the Antonio Bellucci after that ship's final spring 2027 season, keeping capacity in the lineup while refreshing the onboard product. Arva is named after the Swiss stone pine, and its natural finishes support a quieter, more place-driven feel than the polished look common on many new river vessels.
Battery-backed maneuvering on Arva turns sustainability from a back-of-house spec into a guest-facing comfort cue, especially near ports and towns. Avanti's 2027 handoff from Antonio Bellucci also gives Thurgau a visible fleet reset it can use to stand apart as river-cruise competition tightens.

Why This Trend Is Growing
- Wood-led Hospitality
- Natural materials and biophilic interiors are reshaping premium travel by making warmth, authenticity, and regional identity part of the onboard value proposition.
- Hybrid River Cruising
- Battery-assisted maneuvering creates quieter, lower-emission port experiences that turn technical sustainability upgrades into visible guest comfort features.
- Fleet Refresh Positioning
- Scheduled vessel replacements offer cruise operators a branding window to modernize service, design, and sustainability narratives without expanding overall capacity.
Industries Being Reshaped
- River Cruise Travel
- Competition in European river cruising is opening space for differentiated ships that combine upscale amenities with calmer, more locally rooted design.
- Marine Propulsion
- Hybrid drive systems for inland vessels are becoming commercially attractive as operators seek cleaner maneuvering near populated waterfronts and heritage destinations.
- Hospitality Design
- Interior design firms can benefit from demand for tactile, nature-inspired environments that distinguish premium travel products from standardized luxury aesthetics.
