A WhatsApp beta program is testing the ability for users to share content across different social media apps. Users in the beta program will have access to a button under their status, which can share posts on social media. The status updates can go across Facebook as well as other apps like Instagram, Gmail as well as Google Photos.
When users post to the WhatsApp beta program there is no link between the accounts. The data is transferred from one app to the other on the device. Facebook will see the posts as separate occurrences, and users are not able to automatically sync the apps. This is an important distinction that can protect users against aggressive data sharing, as keeping the events separate means data will not be shared between the apps. WhatsApp has indicated that it will operate independently from Facebook since it was acquired by the social media company and these beta tests continue this.
