Modernist Art-Deco Cafés

The Watchhouse Café Brings Modernist Warmth to New York’s Iconic Tower

The new WatchHouse café brings modernist warmth to New York’s iconic tower. Designed by Deidra Hodgson with Sarah Carpenter, the space reflects the Art Deco heritage of the Chrysler Building while presenting a contemporary hospitality experience. Materials such as red travertine, brushed steel, and warm wood highlight architectural detail, while a nine-foot oculus and layered lighting create an atmosphere that feels both intimate and dramatic.

The interior design balances historical reverence with functionality, offering a layout that flows naturally for patrons while honoring the grandeur of the landmark. Custom fixtures, opal inlays, and a projected menu enhance the sense of refinement without overwhelming the building’s character. As WatchHouse’s second U.S. café, the project emphasizes how thoughtful design can celebrate history while shaping a modern cultural space for daily rituals like coffee.
