In order to visualize how best a particular shade of color would look on a car in development, technicians on the Volkswagen design team rely on mobile augmented reality technology. Developed in collaboration between Volkswagen and Metaio, the MARTA (Mobile Augmented Reality Technical Assistance) system was first used to design the XL1 concept car.
The MARTA system functions with a tablet, on which technicians can visualize a variety of design options, such as how a certain shade would appear on a car. When the tablet is held up the vehicle prototype, the system superimposes virtual information over the image of reality. The program is also used by technicians to better visualize auto parts during the protoyping process and how well they will fit inside the vehicle.
