Dutch studio Monadnock introduces Volante, a “garden building” nestled in a lush communal courtyard in Hilversum. The colorful residential block replaces a former care facility and perches atop a newly constructed parking deck, offering 108 social-rent apartments—including units for young adults with disabilities and supported care spaces. Inspired by pastel palettes, its facades are layered with sage green, bubblegum pink, warm cream, and orange glazed bricks, projecting optimism and a sense of community.
At the inside, a bright, double-height entry hall features geometric windows and yellow mailboxes, leading into a central circular void that connects five floors. Natural light dances through pastel corridors, accentuated by spherical light fixtures. Apartments of approximately 50 m² include open living spaces and generous windows opening to French balconies. Volante pioneers sustainable design with gas-free climate systems and intentionally joyful architecture—prioritizing resident well-being while redefining the social housing archetype.
