Instagram Virtual Communities Help Connect College Students

In an effort to "spark conversations and meaningful interactions" Facebook is utilizing new Instagram virtual communities aimed specifically at college students. These new communities will extend beyond the app's regular photo sharing features and will instead aim to connect students together based on various sets of data. These sets of data will include app activity, public posts, and followed accounts. All this information will then be used to figure out what college a student is attending and will then connect them to virtual communities.

Once a student has been added to a certain community they will then confirm by using their graduation year, which will then be added to the user's profile. This will grant users access to their particular community, allowing them to send direct messages to other people in the community and view stories from a group list.
