Hong Kong-based, French graphic designer and illustrator Nicolas Lesaffre has an eye for fierce, yet adorable toy design. The Japanese-inspired trend of infusing cute characters with monster-like qualities has progressed from a niche genre into an established style. The outcome of this is that artists cannot merely rely on using the once-niche style as a means of distinguishing themselves, but instead need to demonstrate well-honed talent in their creations. Lesaffre doesn't seem to have any trouble doing this.
