Tobifant Desk and Chair Set Predates Modern Flatpack Furniture Systems

— January 20, 2026 — Art & Design
The Tobifant desk and chair set was designed in the late 1970s by industrial designer Luigi Colani for German children’s furniture manufacturer Kinderlübke. The system was sold flatpacked and assembled by the user, predating the widespread commercial adoption of flatpack furniture. Constructed from bent beech plywood, the desk and chair were engineered with height-adjustable components that allowed the writing surface, seat, and backrest to be raised as a child grew. This approach was intended to extend the usable lifespan of the furniture across multiple age stages rather than requiring replacement.

The design relied on standardized components and simple mechanical fasteners to enable repeated adjustment and reconfiguration. The set was produced as a coordinated desk-and-chair pairing rather than as standalone pieces, ensuring proportional alignment as dimensions changed. Its flatpack format reduced shipping volume while supporting straightforward assembly. The project reflects an early application of modular thinking in children’s furniture design focused on adaptability and material efficiency.
