Ferfereh is a Pencil Sharpener That Spins Like a Top with Hidden Shavings
References: behance.net
Ferfereh is a pencil sharpener concept designed by Maryam Fallah that reimagines the conventional desk tool as a spinning object inspired by a top. The body of Ferfereh resembles the form of a traditional spinning top and is engineered so it can rotate smoothly on a surface. Inside, the sharpener mechanism and its metal blade are housed within a two-piece assembly that screws together and contains an internal reservoir for pencil shavings.
The location and weight distribution of the sharpening mechanism were calibrated through iterative prototyping to allow both function and rotational balance. Foam or printed prototypes informed adjustments to slope and curvature to optimize spin performance while maintaining sharpening effectiveness.
Ferfereh was developed over several months as a student project at Haute École Arc in Switzerland, with the designer exploring multiple shapes and iterations before arriving at the final spinning form. The object is offered in color variations, including deep blue fading into orange and monochrome black and white configurations.
