The Shuttle Badminton Centre is a new sports facility in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, designed to resemble the shape of a shuttlecock while housing high-performance badminton courts and community spaces. The academy sits on a prominent site adjacent to the Kalinga Sports Complex, with its inverted hemispherical form and aerodynamic geometry referencing the cork base of a shuttlecock to establish a symbolic identity for the sport.
The main structure encloses eight badminton courts arranged in a “dark box” configuration essential for play, and the use of long-span steel trusses and custom curved steel members enables a column-free interior that supports uninterrupted court space. Concrete elements provide thermal insulation against the region’s heat and cyclonic conditions.
The building incorporates lecture theatres, classrooms, a gym, coach rooms, and dormitories to support athlete development. A transparent ground-level volume houses cafes, sports shops, and public facilities that activate the urban edge and invite community engagement. The landscape design includes spectator seating, amphitheatres, and shaded outdoor areas that encourage social interaction. At night, custom lighting accentuates the shuttlecock-inspired form, making the centre a visual landmark.
