The Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre Blends Sport & Community
The Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre blends public sport and community space by combining two NHL-sized ice rinks, multipurpose rooms, a skate shop and warm-side viewing galleries under one roof. The project replaces the conventional cold, windowless arena typology with a layout that centres on light, openness and human-scale flow. Massive timber roof structures and north-facing clerestories flood the ice sheets with natural light without compromising ice quality.
The centre accommodates more than skating and hockey. The architectural plan includes a lobby at the intersection of the two rinks, informal children’s play zones, flexible rooms for classes and community events, and an outdoor rooftop patio. The building is designed to be inclusive and accessible, with neutral-washrooms, accessible circulation, and tactile wayfinding for visitors of all backgrounds.
