Pleated Portable Lamps

The O Series Transforms Steam Stretch Textile Technology into Lighting

The O Series is a portable lighting collection created by A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE and Swiss design studio atelier oï as part of their ongoing TYPE-XIII collaboration. The lamps apply the brand's Steam Stretch textile technology to lighting design, using a single piece of recycled polyester fabric that develops three-dimensional pleats through a heat-activated process. Pattern and structure are woven directly into the material, allowing the lampshade to achieve its form without additional assembly. An oval wire frame designed by atelier oï supports the pleated shade and defines the lamp's silhouette.

The collection features interchangeable lampshades that can be removed and replaced, allowing different colours and textile variations to be used with the same structure. Lighting development was completed in collaboration with Ambientec. The second edition of the O Series was presented at 3 Days of Design in Copenhagen, where new colourways inspired by natural landscapes were introduced.

Textile-formed Lighting
Single-piece pleated shades suggest a new category of lighting where engineered fabrics replace complex assemblies and create distinctive three-dimensional forms.
Interchangeable Lamp Skins
Removable textile covers introduce product systems that extend aesthetic variety while reducing the need to replace entire lighting structures.
Heat-activated Homewares
Steam-shaped materials bring manufacturing innovation into interiors by embedding pattern, structure, and visual texture directly into recycled textiles.

Sectors Adopting This

Lighting
Portable lamps are gaining differentiation through material experimentation, modular components, and collaborations that blur the line between illumination and collectible design.
Textile Manufacturing
Advanced pleating and heat-processing techniques create opportunities for fabrics to function as structural surfaces across furniture, lighting, and decor.
Interior Design
Adaptable lighting accessories support more flexible residential and hospitality spaces where color, texture, and mood can shift without major refurnishing.
