The Loop Lamp is a floor light designed by Raphael Klug that reconsiders the relationship between a lampshade and its light source. Instead of enclosing the illumination within the shade, the design positions a ring of light around the inner edge of a hollow disc-shaped form. A tapered column connects the circular top section to the base, creating a sculptural silhouette that emphasizes the lampshade as the primary visual element. The lamp is shown in a vivid blue finish that highlights its geometric profile and surface texture.
The object was produced in collaboration with Sandhelden using a 3D-printing process based on quartz sand. This manufacturing method creates a granular surface finish that differs from conventional molded materials and contributes to the lamp's matte appearance. The circular light source emits a warm glow from the underside of the upper element, providing ambient illumination without exposing a traditional bulb.

Why This Trend Is Growing
- 3d-printed Lighting
- Quartz sand printing gives lighting brands new ways to create textured, low-volume sculptural forms that would be difficult to achieve with conventional molding.
- Integrated Glow Forms
- Repositioned light sources within open shade structures signal a shift toward fixtures where illumination and silhouette function as a unified design feature.
- Granular Matte Finishes
- Material-driven surface textures create premium visual differentiation for home objects by replacing glossy mass-production cues with tactile, mineral-like finishes.
Industries Being Reshaped
- Lighting
- Ambient floor lamps with exposed ring illumination expand the category beyond bulb-and-shade conventions toward collectible architectural lighting.
- Additive Manufacturing
- Sand-based 3D printing introduces a pathway for producing durable decorative objects with distinctive finishes and reduced reliance on tooling.
- Interior Design
- Statement lighting with bold geometry and vivid color strengthens demand for functional furnishings that serve as focal points in residential and hospitality spaces.
